The RPS Studio Speedlite Accessory Kit features grid spots for creating dramatic effects. Okay, you probably have a Sony NEX-5 like I do, or the new lines of DSLR capable of shooting Full HD video like the Sony A33, A55, Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D and you like me are probably looking for some sort of stabilization accessories so to enable you to shoot smoother video.

Of course one can go the professional way with systems like Redrock Nano (US$387.50 and up), Steadicam Merlin (US$849), Zacuto Target Shooter (US$475) and the list goes on and on, but these close to professional steady systems do cost a fortune. One alternative I found over the weekend, is this ModoSteady585 from Manfrotto launched way back in 2007, some three years ago.

Originally designed for small video camcorders, the ModoSteady 585 can carry loads up to 750g or 1.7lb and the newer line of video DSLR fits just right in. The ModoSteady 585 cost around HK$790 (US$100) and it sure does the job albeit mixed reviews since it was introduced. I tried it out with my Sony NEX-5 and it just fits perfectly although the quick release plate is bit wide for the slim body of the NEX5 where the circular plate sticks out on both the front and rear sides of the camera. There are tons of video on the ModoSteady 585 on YouTube, check it out for yourself and see if this works for you. It works for me.

Phottix and PASM Workshop announced today the PHOTTIX PASM One Shot Portrait Shoot Competition.

Welcome to the PHOTTIX PASM One Shot Portrait Shoot Competition. In order to celebrate the upcoming first anniversary of PASM Workshop (PASM), we here at PASM have come together and organized this fabulous portrait photo shoot competition with Phottix as our major sponsor. We hope you all can come participate and see how you fare in th…is competition. We believe the format is quite exciting, similar to the concept from the TV series, “The Shot”.

Winning is not the most important thing, participating is!

PHOTTIX PASM One Shot Portrait Shoot Competition is a four-round competition that will put photographers in one of the most nerve-wrecking shoots ever.

The competition

Starting November 2010, twenty-four (24) photographers will be dueling in three monthly competitions for a seat in the final eight (8) spots in the Ultimate round. For each round, the organizers will come up with a fixed set and model(s). Photographers will have 15 minutes on the shooting lane, figuring out their lighting, communicating with the model(s) and coaching them into the right pose for that ONE shot. After taking that ONE shot, photographers will have 15 minutes to select one picture, re-touch and submit.

All scores for the first three-rounds will be tallied up and the eight (8) contestants with the highest scores will enter into the Ultimate round – the grand finale!

For the Ultimate Round, all scores will be reset. This round will be run in the same format, utilizing both a fixed set and model(s). Contestants are tested for preparation and execution on lighting, composition and communication. Judges will be scoring each contestant’s final ONE shot live at the studio together with a live audience.

Competition dates

First round: 27 November 2010 (local stage model)*

Contestants can choose (3) time slots (15 minutes) from 2pm to 8pm for each round; final time slot will be drawn at the Contestants’ Briefing on 7:30pm, 17 November 2010.

Qualification round

In order to win a seat at the competition, applicants need to send in ONE portrait shot (studio or outdoor) done in the past six months (determined by file EXIF). Judges will determine which twenty-four (24) amongst all applicants can win a seat for the competition. Judges will look for elements such as composition, posing, lighting control and lens selection.

Contestants’ Briefing

The names of the twenty-four (24) highest score contestants who qualify for the competition will be announced on midnight, 9 November via email. Contestants’ Briefing is set on 17 November 2010, 7:30pm at PASM Workshop, Workshop No. 5, 2/F, Laurels Industrial Centre, 32 Tai Yau Street, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

An admittance fee of HK$380 will be charged to the twenty-four (24) contestants admitted to the competition; payment will be due on midnight, 12 November 2010. Those who failed to bank-in before the deadline will forfeit their slot in the competition and the slot will go to the next highest score applicant.

比賽形式

由2010年11月開始，比賽分四個回合進行。二十四位攝影師將於接着的三個月內以三輪比賽的得分來定奪最後之八強。

在每一比賽回合中，攝影師須在十五分鐘內完成所有拍攝，當中包括燈光準備、模特兒指導等。時間愈見緊湊，壓力倍感增加，功力愈要發揮，比賽愈見精彩。15分鐘的拍攝時間過後，攝影師有另外的十五分鐘時間，去選擇及修飾最精彩的一張相片，然後提交大會。每一回合的分數，將於下一輪比賽前才會公佈，令比賽更為刺激緊張，不到最後亦不知鹿死誰手。

首三輪比賽積分如下，累積得分最高的八位參賽者將可進入最後一輪的終極賽。

Shortly after releasing their NEX line mirror-less camera, the NEX-3 and NEX-5, Sony announced the all new NEX-VG10, the world’s first consumer interchangeable lens HD camcorder which utilizes the same E-mount lens. Like the NEX-3 and NEX-5, this camcorder can use the alpha lenses as well by using the alpha-mount adapter. The NEX-VG10 will start shipping this September at just under US$2000.
